Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue
Fatigue is the most common symptom in a large collection of conditions, but when the feeling of exhaustion grows significant enough that it is regularly affecting your daily life and happiness, this is a separate problem. In some cases, fatigue can be explained, for example if you aren’t sleeping well, or you’ve recently started exercising more frequently, or you are taking care of young children. In these cases all you may need to feel better is a little R&R. For others, their fatigue comes with other symptoms like joint and muscle pain, indigestion, confusion and memory loss, heightened allergies, recurrent infections, inability to exercise and more.
Fatigue comes in many forms including:
- Fibromyalgia
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- Nutrient & Hormone deficiencies
- Chronic stress or Burnout (see our Chronic stress page for more info)
Testing
Testing methods chosen will depend on your specific case, and what we feel will give us the most useful information for your treatment plan, so you may not require all of the testing methods listed below.
Blood Testing
- To determine nutrient levels and rule out deficiencies that may be causing or contributing to fatigue. Hormone levels may also be run to determine any dysfunctions contributing to fatigue.
- To look for current or past infections, as well as to assess immune function
Genetic Testing
- To determine if there are any variations in the way your body processes waste products through the liver that may be impairing elimination and generating a buildup of waste causing fatigue and cellular dysfunction. This is a simple saliva test that gets analyzed through multiple software programs.
Stool Testing
- To identify the quantities of each bacterial species in your intestine can provide valuable information on which organisms may be contributing to your symptoms, and how best to correct the microbial imbalances.
Note this does not mean you have an infection, this test is done to correct the imbalance of normal healthy intestinal species that are present in abnormal levels.
Heavy Metal Testing
- In some cases, a chronic low grade accumulation in your tissues of heavy metals from our environment can impair cellular function and lead to symptoms similar to chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. If we can identify a potential exposure you may have had to a certain heavy metal, it would be important to follow up with a heavy metal challenge test to determine of the level of metals in your body is actually contributing to your condition.
Oxidative Stress Testing
- To assess how well your body is handling damage from oxidative stress (example UV light, inflammation, stress, poor diet, etc). Oxidative stress can affect your DNA, which may contribute to impaired cellular function and chronic fatigue.
Treatment
Chelation Therapy
- To reduce heavy metal levels if this is determined through testing to be a contributing factor. Chelation therapy may be done through oral pharmaceuticals, or via intravenous administration, in which you would come to the clinic on a scheduled protocol to receive treatment for a couple hours at a time. Nutrient replacement therapy is also a crucial part of this treatment plan. For more information in chelation therapy, click here (link to chelation page)
Reducing Oxidative Stress
- Through diet and lifestyle changes, as well as providing supplemental support with herbal/nutrient supplements, or intravenous therapies may be indicated.
Mitochondrial Support
- Supporting proper cellular functioning, through diet, gentle exercise protocols and nutrient supplementation to encourage your cells to restore healthy functionality
Support Detoxification Pathways
- Support your body’s liver to ensure waste is being eliminated appropriately and to prevent buildup of compounds that may be contributing to fatigue, pain and other symptoms.
Correct Microbial Dysbiosis
- There may be simple diet changes, or a more rigorous treatment plan to re-balance the intestinal microflora and restore healthy digestive processes if deemed necessary.
