Hair loss is an inevitable part of aging however for some it may occur sooner than expected. Causes vary and may include:

- Vitamin or mineral deficiency due to poor diet
- Stress
- Medications
Stages of Hair Growth
Hair growth from the follicle occurs in 3 stages. The first stage is called Anagen, or the growing phase. in this phase the hair begins to grow from the follicle and growth can last 2-7 years. The second phase, Catagen, is the transition phase and lasts approximately 10 days. Here the hair follicle shrinks before the third phase, Telogen, begins. This is the resting phase and lasts about 3 months. The last stage, Exogen is the exiting phase where the resting hairs begin to shed and new hair continues to grow in that follicle. Each follicle is at a different stage in the growth cycle. If they were all in the same phase all your hair would fall out at once!
As we age, the anagen phase becomes shorter and shorter leading to weaker and thinner hair. However, problems with hair growth, hair loss and hair thinning may occur if the growth cycle is disrupted. If hairs enter the resting phase too quickly, they tend to shed earlier than normal.
Male Pattern Baldness
Androgenic alopecia, or male pattern baldness is the main cause of hair loss in men. It occurs in a distinct pattern with hair thinning starting at the temples then progressing to a receding hairline. The cause of male pattern baldness is not fully understood however genetics, environmental factors and hormones have been researched to play a role. Dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, is one of the androgens or sex hormones responsible for male characteristics. An increase in DHEA levels can lead to shrinking of hair follicles leading to lack of hair growth.
Hair Regeneration
Hair regeneration is possible using techniques like injections on the scalp. Promoting collagen production has shown to be very effective for the treatment of hair loss, specifically androgenic alopecia.
At Arc, we offer PRP injections, or microneedling with Exosomes to stimulate hair growth and strengthen hair follicles.
