Anti-Aging & Longevity Program

The exact mechanisms by which our bodies age are unknown, but there are many theories that when put together, provide us with a framework to begin looking at ways in which we can reduce the speed at which your body ages. Some of the most common theories include dysregulation of the systems below.

Glycation

The combinations of sugar molecules, proteins and free radicals form a complex call Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGE’s). These AGE’s accumulate over time, but in much higher numbers the more sugar you have available in your blood. They deposit in your tissues and are responsible for complications associated with diabetes like nerve pain, retinopathy, atherosclerosis and aging skin. In the skin AGE’s specifically cause inflammation and degradation of collagen, leading to wrinkles, dark spots, dull skin, uneven tones.

Eating a diet high in sugar, including simple carbohydrates will cause you to produce large amounts of AGE’s, but it is not the only diet modification you can make. AGE’s are also found in foods cooked at high temperatures, especially grilled and/or charred meats, as well as highly processed foods.

Methylation

The addition of a methyl group helps to keep DNA and tissues healthy. Any chronic inflammation or immune dysfunction will put a stress on the ability to methylate, therefor causing errors in DNA synthesis and inefficient bodily functions.

Chronic Inflammation

Excess inflammation in your body produces tissue damage, with a particular affinity for the brain and blood vessels, which can result in dementia, neurodegeneration, damaged and thickened arteries as well as diabetes.

Hormones

Hormones are one of the most obvious and testable markers of aging. Nearly all hormones decrease with age, causing a slow decline in all of our organ systems. Some physicians and researchers will go so far as to say that optimizing hormone levels is the key to prevent all other forms of aging, and that we should supplement with high doses of hormones, to keep them at peak youth levels. Here at Arc we believe in a much gentler form of anti-aging medicine that is really based in preventing unnecessary or rapid decline, but isn’t expecting your body to say 30 forever! We have no idea what the long-term impacts on such treatments are, and we also deeply respect the natural process of aging.

Helping you age gracefully is our goal.

Hormones play a significant role in:

  • Keeping veins and arteries elastic and flexible, preventing heart disease
  • Keeping brain inflammation low, preventing dementia and Alzheimer’s
  • Keeping your bones strong, preventing osteoporosis
  • Maintaining strength and muscle mass
  • Keeping your metabolism up and limit weight gain
  • Keeping your skin tight, full and wrinkle free
  • Keeping your hair strong and full, preventing premature hair loss

Testing

We have multiple testing options to get an idea where your body may be in the aging process. We may run a series of yearly tests to keep track of how you are progressing, and help better direct out treatments. Some tests we may consider include:

  • C-reactive protein
  • Fasting Glucose, Fasting Insulin, HbA1c
  • Homocysteine
  • Personalized Genetic Analysis
  • Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone, DHEA
  • Oxidative Stress Testing
  • Heavy Metal Testing
  • Micronutrient testing

Prevention

Diet

In general, a whole food diet, low in inflammatory foods is best for maintaining healthy organs and slowing down the aging process – but there may be specific approaches that will best benefit you.

  • Intermittent fasting – numerous studies have shown that caloric restrictions have the potential to extend life span, we can help you implement this into your day in a safe way
  • Weight loss – of course carrying extra weight, especially around the abdomen comes with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. But excess weight also severely increases inflammation in your body, which leads to rapid aging and risk for cancer and autoimmune disease.

Lifestyle

A calm and mindful life may be the ultimate key to anti-aging. It is not always easy to implement these things into our busy lives, but we can help with strategies to manage your stress (LINK) and bring good mindful habits like meditation into your daily routine.

  • Exercise is the closest thing we have to a fountain of youth – but it’s most helpful when you incorporate gentle, consistent exercise with some strength and light cardio training into your day. Extreme, cardio heavy exercise will cause more inflammation and high cortisol levels that are contradictory to what you are trying to achieve.
  • Detoxification – limit exposure to pollution and toxins, especially smoking, drinking alcohol and using drugs, and take the time to routinely cleanse your body of build up toxins.

Supplements

There are many nutrients that have been shown to have an impact on the multiple factors that contribute to aging. Of course, we will tailor a prescription to your exact physiology and specific risk factors, but some of the things we may recommend include:

leaf

Antioxidants – Resveratrol, glutathione, superoxide dismutase, CoQ10, ALA, Carnosine

Anti-inflammatories – Fish oils, turmeric, boswellia, quercitin, seratopeptidase

Hormone Regulation – phytoestrogens, testosterone stimulating, bio-identical hormone therapy

Methylation supports – Methylated B-vitamins, B-complex injections
